Chapter Five

DINNER INVITATION

I sniffed, and a lone tear trailed down my cheek. I’d gotten attached to this sweet boy in the short time I’d known him. I’d entertained the possibility that I’d be able to keep him when everything shook out, assuming his hockey-playing owner didn’t want him. I’d convinced myself that Brogan would gladly give him up without argument. After all, he’d forced his girlfriend to do the dirty work by having the dog put down.

Or had he? I wasn’t sure who to believe, but dogs don’t lie, and this retriever had become a bouncing bundle of bliss at the sight of his daddy.

“You have no idea how much it means to me that you rescued him.”

“Are you going to take him?” I refused to meet his eyes. The reality of my loss slammed me in the stomach. I had no right to keep him.

Brogan tilted his head, looking as if he didn’t understand what I was getting at. “He’s my good boy. Of course, I’m taking him.”

“Okay,” I choked out and viciously swiped at the tears now flowing.

Brogan moved closer. Before I knew what he was doing, he leaned in so close that I smelled his minty breath mixed with his distinctive but pleasant male scent. For a moment, I thought he might kiss me. Instead, he gently wiped the tears from my cheeks with the pad of one thumb. Our eyes locked, and an inexplicable knowing passed between us. Something special was happening here. The chemistry registered off the charts, but there was more. I couldn’t define it, but it was there.

My stomach did flip-flops, and my heart whispered, “This guy is the one.” How ridiculous. I didn’t know him, despite my Googling earlier. He was everything he said he was: a nice guy, a good teammate, and a respected member of the hockey community. The girlfriend, or ex-girlfriend, was a different story. She wasn’t well-liked, as evidenced by comments and anecdotes on social media. People were already taking sides as to who was telling the truth. I knew what side I was on. Wrigley had made that decision for me.

Without thinking, I touched the spot on my cheek where he’d brushed away my tears. He took my hand in his, never dropping his gaze. The promise of something special floated between us. I wasn’t imagining it. I had friends and family who’d always told me that I’d know when I met Mr. Right. I hadn’t believed them, and I still wasn’t convinced. Yet, Brogan was different. I didn’t know how I knew that, but I did. His long fingers entwined with mine, and his large hand engulfed my much smaller one.

I’d never experienced this sudden rush of emotions before, like love at first sight, or more likely lust. I pulled my hand away and retreated a few steps until my back hit the closed door.

“How long have you had him?” I asked in a shaky voice, completely disarmed by this man’s presence.

“Ten years. Wrigs was a gift from my mom, who was dying of cancer.
